There has been a slight decline across the three segments. The VLCC, the largest class, saw a 14% decline due to a generally low demand in the market and due to the fact that few cargo deals were concluded. Therefore, shipowners are optimistic that the segment will hit a “bottom” in the coming days. It was a more stable week for the Suezmax, but here too we see that rates have fallen in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. On average for the segment, rates are down 7%. For the Aframax, things have calmed down after we saw them pass $100,000 a day last week, especially in the Mediterranean where there is a lot of available tonnage, but also in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Average earnings are now $83,774 per day.

Average rates fell as much as 9% to $12,782 per day after prices on raw materials fell, and there was growing uncertainty around China’s steel situation as well. With this insecurity, period activity also decreased. Panamax USG to Rotterdam alone fell as much as 21% to $10.562 per day. We also see a lot of vacant tonnage from last week across the bulk segment.

The market continues the rhythm of the prior week. Shipowners are still very comfortable and have absolutely no need to make any hasty conclusions, and longer periods are still favoured.
